A new sweater

Rainbow sweater

This is a baby sweater that I’m knitting out of Koigu KPPPM and some plain white fingering weight yarn. Normally the pattern is just a two color one, but I only had one skein of this Koigu; and the pattern says it only takes 50g of the contrasting color to make a 3 or 6 month size; so I’m hoping it’ll be enough. I can modify the pattern on the sleeves to leave a bit of the fair isle out if needed to make it work out.

The pattern is from dale baby designs nbr 162, pattern 09. There’s no name for it. It will have a small repeating heart motif up on the chest when I get that far. Does anyone want to propose a name for me to call this sweater?

In other news

My son wore the sweater I made him for Christmas today. Yay!! It looks great on him, the sleeves just have a little bit of extra length to them so he can grow a bit more, but not much; and the length is perfect (again, just a little room to grow). Pictures of that later. Also pictures later of the new toy that will show up on my door step later this week, cross your fingers! I’m annoyed that UPS didn’t work today as it would have shipped out today had they been working. I suppose they do deserve a small vacation after the christmas rush; but still. :)

It’s all about spinning around here these days

First I tried to figure out what I wanted to do:

Spinning in progress (by Nancy Walsh)

Calculating the number of wraps per inch for the singles, and what the resulting yarn would be. There’s a lot of possible variations in what you’ll get – but it’s a good place to start. I also spun up some samples then navajo plied them to get a better idea of how the fiber would behave.

Then I did a lot of spinning:

Then I did a lot of plying and ended up with some yarn:

Three ply sock yarn

I rate it a fairly good success! I still have a bit left on two bobbins that I need to navajo ply to finish it up. This is about 7.6 ounces of yarn plied so far (another skein isn’t pictured). I was aiming for a sturdy but squishy yarn that is round (hence the three ply). It has a lot of bounce in it too. I can’t wait to knit with it, but I have some gift knitting I need to finish first.
