We interrupt this program for some Japanese Short Rows

Normally I hate short rows, all those wraps are totally fiddly; and the end result never looked very good for me. I decided to try socks with short rows again, and wanted a different method.

Japanese Short Rows are really cool. Here’s the heel only halfway knit. Yes, you do get dangly little saftey pins everywhere.

I tried to use those saftey pin like stitch markers, but they were too thick. These weren’t even coilless saftey pins, which I would recommend, as it would be a bit easier to remove the saftey pin if you happen to catch that coil on the wrong side of the loop. If that happens you have to stretch the yarn in that area a tiny bit more to get the saftey pin off. Mine came out about 80% correct, and 20% wrong. The heel still looks awesome though.

a few hours later - an update on that KV2.0 thing. I have the demo versions ready. I have the full versions ready (I hope! no more last minute bugs please!). I have the upgrade webpage about half ready. I still have to build the coupon codes for upgraders (this is a biggie) and do some PHP for the demo download, and then upload the finished/changed web pages and then email everyone about it.

Interesting. Honestly, I’ve done exactly one kind of heel. All my socks are cuff down, heel flap with heel stitch. I like it enough that I haven’t had reason beyond curiosity to try something new.

Your heel is lovely, but those safety pins look plenty fiddly to me. I think short rows are fun. And I’m jealous you’re knitting handspun socks. I really want to do that.

Those are really pretty. I have not tried Japanese Short Rows yet but I am intrigued by the concept. I don’t mind wrap-and-turn short rows too much, but I always end up with the wrap a little too tight on one side. I went through a spell of knitting a lot of longies/soakers and they all use short rows to make roomy butts, so I got pretty good at hiding my short row wraps.

I’m lurking, and thinking about KV
But in the meantime, have been doing lots of short row experiments, and I think that the only people who seem confident enough to show a really clear close up of their heels, are those who used the Japanese short row method! I also love that this method, does not look so ugly as wrapped short rows do on a variegated yarn.

I am finding the idea of pins though, not quite so appealing with my disabled hands and risk of getting pricked (which can put me into trauma/shock…honestly!) So could you tie a little loop of yarn round at that point, and then pick that up at the end? Or could it be a mini undoable stitch marker??
